By The Way, I Forgive You is the sixth full-length studio album by Brandi Carlile and was released on February 16th 2018. It is their break-through album, featuring the lead single The Joke, which propelled them into a bigger audience, after the band performed the song live on the 2019 Grammy Awards to critical acclaim.
The Album was produced by Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings, and was nominated for several awards including 3 Americana Music and 6 Grammy Awards. It won 3 Grammys including, Best American Roots performance & Best American Roots song for The Joke, and Best Americana Album.

The Joke – lead single which was performed live to critical acclaim at the 2019 Grammys.
The Mother – a song referencing her “mantra” as Brandi Carlile refers to it – I Am The Mother of Evangaline – talking herself into the role. The first line of the song Welcome to the end of being alone inside your mind, is attributed to Trina Shoemaker, who said that to Brandi when Evangaline was born.
Party of One – two versions of which exist – the album version with film clip starring Elizabeth Moss, and a version with Sam Smith in duet raising money for Children in Conflict.
In a later interview for the next album (In These Silent Days) Brandi Carlile explained to Zane Lowe, “When we wrote By The Way, I Forgive You” , I didn’t write that record as an instructional about how to forgive for difficult things, but I wrote it because I was needing to.”
Curios:
For the recording of the album, a long time fan turned friend of the band, the White House former photographer Pete Souza, documented the recording and contribued back up vocals to the song ‘Hold Out Your Hand’. He also did the gate fold photography.
The cover of the album is a painting by Scott Avett, of the band The Avett Brothers. Brandi has said she sat for the portrait, then didn’t ask to see the final version until it was locked in place as the cover.
Paul Buckmaster arranged the strings for Whatever You Do, and Party of One. In fact it’s been reported that Party of One was the last string arrangement he did prior to his passing on November 17, 2017.
Chris Willman, a noted arts critic for Variety rated the album the 2nd best of 2018.
The first single was released as a digital pre-order which also allowed immediate access to a digital single – The Joke.
A digital copy of the album was also provided with concert tickets upon release.
