On May 5, 2017 Cover Stories was released. An album celebrating 10 years of Brandi Carlile’s breakout album The Story. It was created to raise money for “War Child” through the band’ Looking Out Foundation. The album is 2 LPS, with 1 LP being the original tracks and the 2nd LP containing covers by various artists of every track.

The album is still available through the artist’s website and is as of 2021 had raised over $1 million dollars.

A limited number of signed test pressings were also available through the artist’s store.

Brandi Carlile shared that it wasn’t an easy undertaking. They needed to seek permission from the old publishing company and label of the album to request them to re-do the songs in this new version, and then agree to have profits go to benefit War Child. They agreed.

In 2011, Adele released a cover version of the song “Hiding My Heart” as a bonus track on her 2011 album 21. This recording served as the “original inspiration” of Cover Stories, as reported in Rolling Stone.

Barack Obama wrote the forward for the album “As an artist, Brandi Carlile is using her talent on behalf of the most vulnerable among us, children living in areas of conflict. She reminds us that, together, we can build for our children a more just, peaceful world.”

All of the tracks were recorded in 2016, except “Hiding My Heart” and Ruby Amanfu‘s cover of “Shadow on the Wall“, which was produced by Patrick Carney and released in 2015.
