After looking at all the music played at Brandi Carlile’s Echoes Through the Canyon, we now want to take a look at the musicians. – There were by our count 43 in total. There was a beautiful familial aura around the artists that took the stage over the three days. For the most part all were all deeply connected to either Brandi Carlile or Joni Mitchell.

NIGHT ONE
There was of course Allison Russell kicking the weekend off on Friday June 10th with her band of Rainbow coallition artists, with guest appearances including Brandi Carlile, Wendy & Lisa, Sista Strings and JT Nero. Allison’s touring band changes but this version included: Elizabeth Pupo-Walker, Elenna Canlas, Meg Brittcole, Ganessa James and Mandy Fer.
That was followed by a solo set with Marcus Mumford, who along with Lucius and Blake Mills and Taylor Goldsmith have all played with each other, on each others albums, formed bands together, toured and written together. They are their own version of a collective. They also attend Joni Jams. During Marcus Mumford’s set, he invited Brandi Carlile (and Blake Mills) on stage for a couple of songs, and Taylor Goldsmith jumped up onto the stage in an impromtu song they co-wrote together.
Then Brandi Carlile, Tim and Phil Hanseroth ended the first evening, with their usual band (Monique and Chantee Ross of Sista Strings, Kyleen King, Josh Newman, Matt Chamberlain), plus Marcus Mumford joined for the full set on percussion. Brandi introduced their new touring keyboard player for 2023 shows, Dave MacKay.
Special guest (surprise) performers included Annie Lennox and Sarah McLachlan and Brandy Clark.
NIGHT TWO
The second night, Saturday June 10th, Brandi Carlile , Tim and Phil Hanseroth, opened for the evening in an acoustic set that also featured a few duets with guest, Catherine Carlile and a solo performance by Tim & Phil Hanseroth covering Simon & Garfunkle’s Sounds of Silence.
The main event – that is – the Joni Jam featured the full raft of suspects we have come to know through the first Joni Jam featuring Joni Mitchell at Newport. (that peformance has been recorded and released 28 July 2023)
This Joni Jam included:
Brandi Carlile, Tim & Phil Hanseroth, Josh Newman, Lucius, Blake Mills, Taylor Goldsmith, Celisse (in a special performance), Ben Lusher and Rick Wakefield (in a special performance) Matt Chamberlain and Marcus Mumford (in a special performance) and Allison Russell.

The third and final night on Sunday 11 July, started with Tanya Tucker and her full band. Tanya is touring after this year releasing her second album produced by Brandi Carlile – Sweet Western Sounds. Brandi Carlile joined her on stage to perform two of the tracks from the recent album.
The final headline act of the weekend was The Highwomen. This was their first ever headlining official show with full original group. Featuring Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, and Natalie Hemby.
