In 2011 Miranda Lambert recorded one of Brandi Carlile’s songs – called Same Old You. She invited Brandi to sing on the track with her. It’s a rare release of a track that has been written by Brandi Carlile but not recorded nor released by the band. The album, Four The Record, features a who’s who of other Nashville female singers and songwriters including Natalie Hemby, Kasey Musgraves, Brandy Clarke, Patty Loveless, Gillian Welch.

Brandi discussed this ironic country song at a small venue in 2009 – watch that here on YouTube (around the 3 minute mark in the clip below)

In the clip, after playing a few classic country songs of the same ilk (patsy cline etc) she led into playing Same Old You. In her intro she says:

“I thought country music has influenced my voice so much, in my life, that I thought it may as well influence the lyrics to a song. So I thought I’d take every bad classic country and western cliche, by that I mean great, and try and feed it into one song. And I did. I’m really proud of it, and I thought it was hilarious, and after I wrote it I called my mother on the phone, who is a country music singer,
and this is how this all started, and she did not get it. I said ‘Mum, check out this hilarious country song I wrote, and I sang it to her and when I was done I picked up the phone and I expected her to be just cracking up laughing and she goes ‘uuuaaah, honey I think that’s your hit!’.”

Same Old You has never been recorded by the band for a released album.

Brandi Carlile has known Miranda Lambert for many years and sang at the wedding between Miranda Lambert and Black Shelton (which ended in 2015).
