This is a deep cut track written by Tim Hanseroth that has at least four known released versions out there in the wild. The band played it for years prior to finally officially releasing a studio recording on their second album The Story in 2007. It was the ‘easter egg’ at the end of the album after Again Today finishes around 04.46 minutes The ‘hidden track’ begins at 5.02 minutes

1.The first version known is from the Live at Neumo’s EP released – dated April 2005
2.The second version – Live at Sony Connect EP digital exclusive – dated September 2005
3.The third version (first studio recording) – Was released on The Story in 2007. The song’s melody changed in the chorus for this official recording from previous live releases.
4.The forth version – (not strictly an official release, but definately an alt take done at some point). UUnknown date, a really low-fi , piano (synth?) version that appeared as the intro to the VEEPS stream of the The Story in it’s entirety (by the band in their home studio) during the covid lock down era (2021)

One notable other version was Adele covering it for a bonus track on her album 21. It’s never been available outside of the UK for streaming, although is easily available on YouTube globally. The band did include that Adele cover version on the 10th anniversary of The Story – Cover Stories.

In a couple of videos, Brandi talks about T-Bone Burnett not loving the song, and that’s one of the reasons it ends up as the hidden track.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
This is how the story went
I met someone by accident
Who blew me away and blew me away
It was in the darkest of my days
When you took my sorrow and you took my pain
And buried them away, buried them away

[Chorus]
I wish I could lay down beside you when the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I’ve ever known you’ll disappear one day
So I’ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away

[Verse 2]
You dropped me off at the train station
Put a kiss on top of my head
Watched me wave, you watched me wave
Then you went on home to your skyscrapers
And neon lights and waiting papers
That you call home, you call it home

[Chorus]
I wish I could lay down beside you when the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I’ve ever known you’ll disappear one day
So I’ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away

[Verse 3]
I woke up feeling heavy hearted
I’m going back to where I started
The morning rain, the morning rain
And although I wish that you were near
The same old road that brought me here
It’s calling me home, it’s calling me home

[Chorus]
I wish I could lay down beside you when the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I’ve ever known you’ll disappear one day
So I’ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away
I can spend my whole life hiding my heart away
