On 24 May 2023 Brandi Carlile announced on her socials a new track had dropped on the same time as the latest episode of Ted Lasso on Apple Music.
Home is a cover of the classic final track from The Wiz, the mid 70’s soul reinterpreation of the Wizard of Oz. Originally sung by Stephanie Mills in the original Broadway production and later covered by various people including the movie original performed by Diana Ross. The track was written by Charlie Smalls.
The musicians on the track include drummer Matt Chamberlain, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, pianist Dave Palmer, and the string section of Chauntee and Monique Ross (aka SistaStrings). It was recorded in Rick Rubin’s ShangriLa Studios.
The track was also produced by Brandi Carlile.
Every approach to the song “Home” so far has been a masterpiece. It was stressful to take on and we did our best not to fuck it up! We went down live and the string arrangement by SistaStrings takes it over the top. What a song!
