This live recording of Raise Hell, was released as a record store day 7 inch in 2013. Pressed on gold transluscent vinyl and limited to 1000 copies, side A features a live recording of Raise Hell from Bear Creek and Side B features the band The Lone Bellow.
Raise Hell was written by Brandi Carlile and Tim Hanseroth.
This vinyl single was released by Descendant Records which was a sub label under RED which handled releases for independent record labels. This one was the home of the bands The Lone Bellow and Colony House. (side B of this release is The Lone Bellow)
The Raise Hell live recording is from their Hard Way Home Summer Convoy tour in 2013, (prior to then beginning the bands The Firewatcher’s Daughter writing and recording).
The song was originally recorded in 2011 at Bear Creek, and that summer was then road-tested on tour as they supported Ray LaMontagne. For a while they would quietly call the song Ray’s Hell after the tour became problematic. Bear Creek was subsequently released in 2012, with Raise Hell making it on the album as the second track. They continued to tour the album in the Hard Way Home Summer Convoy Tour in 2013, and it’s from that tour this live recording is made.
Fun fact 1. – This live recording has a very rare Josh Neumann credit as piano player (not cello)
The live credits:
Recorded and Engineered by Alan Gardner
Mixed and Mastered by Martin Feveyear at Jupiter Studios in Seattle.
The photo of the sleeve is taken by Hannah Hanseroth (Tim’s wife).
Fun Fact 2 : In 2020 when the Brandi Carlile band was named Record Store Day ambassadors, Phil Hanseroth revealed the design of the cover is aesethically inspired by the 1990’s US punk rock band, Fugazi, 1990 7inch vinyl release 3 Songs.
The B Side is a live recording by The Lone Bellow and their live track You Never Need Nobody.
