The supergroup featuring Amanda Shires, Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby and Maren Morris, formed in 2019 and recorded this debut album.
The Highwomen pay homage to the male country super group The Highwaymen, featuring Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings. In fact the song “Highwaymen” inspired the re-interpreting of their own song “Highwomen” where the lyrics are reimagined.
History shows it is Amanda Shire who first kicked off the idea of forming the group. All singers contributed music and tracks to the album. The album was produced by Dave Cobb (By The Way, I Forgive You , In These Silent Days).
The lack of female representation on country radio was the impetus for the group forming. The debut album also featured backing vocals of Sheryl Crow and Yola.
Considered to be an incubator of fellow women artists, and being a ‘highwoman’ means more than just being on that recording. The group debuted at Loretta Lynn’s 87th birthday concert and has performed on a handful of occasions since including a famous concert at Newport Folk Festival where the surprise guest was Dolly Parton in 2019.
The band recorded 15 songs, but only 12 made the album. Once of the songs that was recorded, not on the album is a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain.
Available on all formats. A limited amount of vinyl were signed by the band on release.
